A Visit To Beautiful and Colourful
Burano
Love colourful villages? When you next visit Venice, make sure to set aside some time to visit the stunning island of Burano. Just a short boat ride away from Venice you’re transported to a completely different world. Burano is located along the lagoon and is famous for its brightly coloured fishermen’s houses with their vibrant hues. The reason they were painted in this fashion was to enable fisherman to distinguish their houses even in terrible weather when the lagoon was filled with a thick fog.
History
Lace Making in Burano
In years gone by, Burano was famous for lace making which has became an important cottage industry since it began in the 16th Century. The town’s Museo del Merletto has exhibits on the development of the lace making in the area with shops selling lace cloths, dining accessories and clothes. To see some of the best lace artefacts head over to the many lace shops along the main promenade and admire the amazing craftsmanship which has gone into the wonderful lace creations.
Fresh Seafood Restaurants
With its fabulous location directly on the sea, you can be sure to find some of the freshest fish here. There are plenty of laid back seafood restaurants where you can be assured of a warm welcome and a wonderful “catch of the day”. Relax and unwind and enjoy the simple but delicious gastronomy with a glass of local wine. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, don’t forget to try the local butter cookies called “bussolai buranei” – they’re delicious!
Afterwards, why not go for a pleasant wander through the many canals and bridges around Burano – there so many little corners to explore. Make sure to visit the historic Chiesa di San Martino with its 17th century leaning bell tower.
Burano and The Venice Carnival
If you visit during Venice Carnival you can also catch glimpses of the beautiful Carnival Costumes like these which look amazing against the colourful backdrop of the Burano walls.
