Artist Jani Leinonen Designs Giant Floral Easter Egg at the Dolder Grand Zurich
The Dolder Grand is ready for Easter! Its annual giant Easter Egg is standing proudly in the Steinhalle foyer. Meauring 2.5 metres high, this beautiful floral masterpiece was designed by world renowned artist Jani Leinonen. It’s the first time that the hotel has commissioned an artist for the design of its Easter Egg, but choosing Jani Leinonen was a logical decision. The hotel has a long association with the artist, going back to 2009. In fact, the hotel currently has 6 of his works on display in various part of the hotel, as part of its renowned Art Collection.
12,000 Carnations In Jani Leinonen’s Giant Easter Egg at Dolder Grand
The impressive Easter egg is made out of 12,000 fresh carnations to a design created by Leinonen — a huge task! It took a team of 4 florists 2 days to finish this work and it will be on display in the hotel foyer for a week. The structure is bright, colourful and very eye catching. If you get the chance to visit the hotel for Easter, or may be go for lunch or dinner, this stunning egg will be ready to greet you when you arrive.
FORGIVE – A message on the Dolder Grand Easter Egg for 2022
The message the Finnish artist has emblazoned on the egg is the word FORGIVE, which is very appropriate in today’s troubled times. Not only does it stand as a statement against war and violence, but Leinonen tells us it comes from Jesus’s last message to the soldiers who were fighting and looting, before he died: “Forgive them for they know not what they do.” The artist’s work can be found in galleries across the world, and he is known for his art reflecting both visually and thematically, the current state of the world.

Seeds In Their Pockets by Jani Leinonen
There is also a display of dried flowers in front of the Easter Egg which are flowers collected by the artist from various war zones. They are entitled “Seeds In Their Pockets” after the artist read an article about an Ukranian woman giving soldiers sunflower seeds to put in their pockets so that after they died, sunflowers would bloom.
The Dolder Grand Art Collection
Jani Leinonen’s other artistic works of art in the Hotel Dolder Grand are displayed in the bar area and in the area outside Restaurant Salz. The “stained glass effect” works of at outside the restaurant appear to make the area look like a chapel, but if you look closely you will see the artist’s ironic and slightly irreverent take with the wording. He is known for his provocative yet playful pieces which put the spotlight on capitalism and our “self-centred consumerist society”. He says “I often use finished products and items from the real world, like cereal boxes or beggar’s signs. I turn this junk into art.”
The hotel has a total of 120 pieces of art in its collection and other artists featured include Dalí, Murakami and Tinguely. So why not whizz up to the “Fairytale Castle on the Hill”, the beautiful Dolder Grand and maybe have a drink at the bar, or enjoy lunch or dinner after viewing the stunning giant floral Easter Egg by Jani Leinonen.
