Chasselas and Sushi – When Swiss Wines Meet Japanese Sushi
On Lake Zurich
A Totally Umamilicious Experience
Chasselas and Sushi Abord M.S. Albis on Lake Zurich
The Japanese National Tourist Office (JNTO) and the Office des Vins Vaudois recently hosted a very interesting event on board the M.S. Albis boat on Lake Zurich. It was aimed at highlighting the little known fact that Chasselas wines from the Vaud region of Switzerland and Japanese Sushi make for a wonderful combination! Under the hashtag #Umamilicious it was an opportunity to meet winegrowers from the Swiss canton of Vaud and to find out why their wines pair so well with the popular Japanese speciality.
A Totally Umamilicious Experience
We were told that the advantage of Chasselas is that it is a wine that “follows” rather than dominates food so it enhances the delicate flavours of sushi and makes for a perfect match. As we discovered, it all made for a totally umamilicious experience!
Vaudois Wine Very Popular in Japan
Over the past few years, Vaudois wine has become increasingly popular in Japan. In fact, Bettina Kraemer of the JNTO told us that that Japan is no stranger to wine as the country has been producing wine since the 19th century! In fact the region of Yamanshi is well known for its wine and approximately 40% of all Japanese wines come from this area.
ZSG Culinary Cruises on Lake Zurich
The MS Albis from the Zürichsee Schifffahrtsgesellschaft (ZSG), was the perfect venue for a Chasselas and Sushi evening as this March as well as in October 2022, there will be a Japanese Gastronomic Cruise ‘Izakaya’ setting sail on Lake Zurich every Saturday with lots of tempting Japanese!
The word “Izakaya” roughly means a “sake shop in which to linger” and these informal eateries can be found in every Japanese village and town. The ZSG’s culinary cruise embraces authentic Japanese cuisine, with handmade gyoszas, seaweed salad and other specialities. Since Japan is not yet open to travel right now, a cruise on Lake Zurich would make for an unforgettable Japanese experience whilst we wait for the country to open up again for international visitors, hopefully, later on in 2022.
