Dr. Valter Longo’s Longevity Diet: Healthy Ageing & Weight Loss

One of the most interesting books I have read lately is Dr. Valter Longo’s Longevity Diet all about healthy ageing and weight loss. Dr. Valter Longo is a biogerontologist and director of the Longevity Institute at the University of Southern California. He is widely recognised for his research on ageing, nutrition and disease prevention. His book, The Longevity Diet, outlines a scientifically-backed eating plan designed to promote longevity, improve health, and support weight management.

At the heart of Longo’s approach is a plant-based diet, with moderate fish consumption and low protein intake, particularly for people under 65. His diet emphasises whole foods, healthy fats and complex carbohydrates while incorporating time-restricted eating and periodic fasting-mimicking diet (FMD) cycles to encourage cellular repair and metabolic efficiency.

Key Principles of The Longevity Diet

  1. Predominantly Plant-Based Diet with Limited Fish Consumption:

    • Emphasises vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds.
    • Recommends fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids (e.g., salmon, sardines) up to 2-3 times per week.
    • Minimises red meat, poultry, and processed foods.
  2. Moderate Protein Intake:

    • For adults under 65, protein intake should be about 0.31-0.36 grams per pound of body weight daily.
    • After 65, protein intake can be slightly increased to help maintain muscle mass.
  3. Healthy Fats and Complex Carbohydrates:

    • Favours olive oil, nuts, and seeds for healthy fats.
    • Encourages whole grains and high-fiber vegetables for sustained energy.
  4. Time-Restricted Eating:

    • Meals should be consumed within an 11-12 hour window each day to support metabolic health.
  5. Periodic Fasting-Mimicking Diet (FMD):

    • Suggests a 5-day FMD cycle a few times per year to mimic fasting effects while providing essential nutrients.

This diet is designed to support weight loss, improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation, contributing to overall well-being and longevity. Here are some examples of the typical sorts of diets you will find on the meal plan.

Will You Lose Weight on This Diet?

This meal plan averages 1,200-1,500 calories per day, depending on portion sizes. I found that there was actually quite a lot of food in each meal and the next time I try it I will aim to go for smaller portions. However, thanks to its focus on whole foods, high-fibre ingredients, and time-restricted eating, I did actually lose weight. I did drink at least 2.5 litres of still water each day and in addition I drank herbal teas (with no caffeine) throughout the day. I gave up coffee gradually over the 3 days before I started the plan. The diet claims to achieve weight loss by:

  • Reducing processed food intake
  • Encouraging fat metabolism
  • Enhancing insulin sensitivity

If combined with light exercise and occasional fasting-mimicking cycles, weight loss could be even more noticeable. The diet is sustainable, making it a long-term approach to health, not just a short-term fix.
