Freddie Mercury Statue Montreux – Tribute to the Queen Front Man
If you ever visit Montreux in Switzerland, one of the “must do” things is to see the Freddie Mercury Statue. This tribute to the Queen front man is situated just in front of Lake Geneva, or Lac Léman as it is known locally. It seems as if Freddie is looking out across the water and beyond, in an area that became his adopted home, and very close to his heart.

He famously said that “If you want peace of mind, come to Montreux”, and if you look at the beauty of the Montreux Riviera with all its colourfully planted lake side beds, and its balmy climate, you can relate. Freddie felt at home in Montreux and it is here that he recorded six albums with Queen. The albums he created here include his last one, “Made in Heaven”, which in retrospect, is very poignant.
Freddie Mercury Loved Montreux
For someone who fell in love with the town, it is fitting that Montreux has chosen to remember the singer with this bronze statue as a permanent tribute. The Freddie Mercury statue was erected in 1996 and ever since has become a mecca for Queen fans. Throughout the year you will find fans laying flowers at the foot of his statue. You will see them congregating, taking pictures and creating selfies with this singing legend. On the occasion of his birthday you will find bouquets of flowers strewn all along the promenade.
Freddie Mercury The Singer
Freddie Mercury who died in1991 was born in Zanzibar in 1946 the son of a British-Indian civil servant. However it was in London, where he began his entry into the world of song, and his career with Queen began in 1970.
Freddie Mercury and The Montreux Jazz Festival
He first came to the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1978 to record the album “Jazz” with Queen. However, he fell in love with this lakeside town and made it his home, finding peace and tranquility in this beautiful spot with its mild and sunny climate.
Freddie’s apartment overlooked the lake and he also purchased the “Mountain Studio” recording studio to record his tracks. Incidentally, you can find out all about this if you take part in the” Queen – The Studio Experience” tour in Montreux. You can also visit a little exhibition which is dedicated to Queen and perfect for fans!
Montreux was very close to his heart and on his last track there are pictures of the Lake. Thus is it very fitting that his lakeside memorial has pride of place along Montreux Riviera with views of this very special location.
