Fancy a train journey on Europe’s very first cog wheel train to the summit of Mount Rigi? You can take the train from the station at Vitznau and the views as you ascend are incredible. Green pastures, cows grazing in fields and the bright blue colour of the water in Lake Lucerne below.
Known as the Queen of the Mountains, Rigi offers scenic view across the whole of central Switzerland, once you reach the top. In fact you can even see as far as France and Germany.
The mountain has been very popular with artists over the years and was painted in a series by JMW Turner.
The author Mark Twain also visited Rigi whilst making his “Tour of Europe” in the 1870s.
If you’re setting off in the afternoon why not start with lunch first at the luxurious Park Hotel Vitznau which is located directly on the banks of Lake Lucerne. During the Summer months you can eat al fresco in the garden.
