The Story of The Fork In Water in Vevey
There are not many lakes in the world where you see an 8 metre (26 foot) tall fork sticking out of the water. However, if you travel to Vevey you will find just that! Lake Geneva (or Lac Léman as it is referred to in these parts) has a wonderful piece of Swiss art taking pride of place in the water along the promenade. There are even seats set into the rocks so that you can sit down and admire this impressive sculpture!
The Fork In Vevey – From Temporary Exhibit To Permanent Fixture
The fork was originally installed in 1995 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Alimentarium – Musée de l’Alimentation, Vevey’s Food Museum. It was supposed to be a temporary exhibit for just a year but in 1997 it was taken down. It was then re-installed in the lake 10 years later for a temporary exhibition at the Alimentarium on cutlery.
By this time the gigantic fork has become something of a celebrity attraction and petitions were signed, and the people of Vevey demanded the fork remain in place. Luckily the authorities finally agreed in 2008 and since then the fork has been delighting locals and visitors alike.
It is such a beautiful landmark and as you can see from the photos it looks good in any light.
